eThekwini Mayor, Clr James Nxumalo, has urged the delegates attending the 2011 African Renaissance (KZN Chapter) in Durban that they should use the platform to brainstorm and develop new new ideas that will move the African continent towards a positive direction in the twentieth century.
Delivering the opening address at the two-day symposium held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre this morning, Nxumalo implored the participants to engage unto a wide discussion that will create a wide spectrum of possibilities for the peoples of Africa.
"It is no secret that our continent is still faced with huge challenges such as the deteriorating health infrastructure, a failing economy, lack of a sound infrastructure development, poverty and a shortage of technical skills base, Therefore, I implore every delegate that we use this Durban's critical platform to become the primary drivers of our own continental agenda.
Accordingly, emphasisd Nxumalo, the city of eThekwini has positioned itself as the home of all African Renaissance festivities because the annual symposium harbours an economic and social developmental agenda for the continent.
"Comrades, the African Renaissance is a comprehensive and global plan of action to fight the poverty of ideas and, also, aims to ensure the economic and industrial growth of th mother continent.
This gathering should develop an action plan that aims to provide sustainable solutions to the African and the Diaspora challenges going forward" explained Nxumalo.
These sentiments were further echoed by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize and the South Africa's Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba.
Both eminent political leaders cajoled the delegates that it was imperative that they take ownership of the African destiny as the 21st century was meant for the revival of the continent.
Using the Durban event, they called on the delegates to engage themselves robustly as the continent moves towards a vibrant vision as an re-emerging giant and a significant player in the New World Order.

eTHEKWINI MAYOR VOWS TO FIGHT CORRUPTION
AMID fanfare as the new eThekwini mayor, councillor James Nxumalo, delivered his acceptance speech in front of thousands of Durban resisents on Monday (06 June 2011) , he vowed to uproot and eradicate fraud, corruption and maladministration that was alleged to characterise the City Hall chambers.
"I am not a person who belives in making promises for promises' sake. I want to declare war against fraud, corruption and maladministration in all its manifestations.
Strict measures will be taken against councillors and officials who were found to be doing business with the municipality they serve.
We will ensure that departments adhere to the supply chain management processes and officials will not be allowed to flout tender procedures" warned Nxumalo.
His Worship, Clr Nxumalo outlined approximately ten major priorities that, he conceded, would drive forward the numerous unmatched achievements that were scored over the past 17-years of democracy under the stewardship of the outgoing mayor Obed Mlaba.
He noted the great strides made to create an integrated city in line with the municipaslity's 20/20 vision, andemphasised that together with his 10-man executive committe they aim to enhance service delivery backlogs with the huge budget of R 68 million they inherit from the previous council.
The new exco saw councillor Nomvuzo Shabalala becoming the Deputy Mayor, councillor Logie Naidoo becoming the Speaker, and councillor Stanley Xulu assuming the vital role of being the Chief Whip.
As councillors of this municipality, we have to ensure that we show leadership and each councillor must make themselves available for public scrutiny. All councillors must declare all the business interests they have with our municipality programmes, cautioned Nxumalo.
"Collegues, in everything we do we must strive to find the right balance between economic, social and environmental responsibilities.
Our major and critical priority is to eliminated the backlogs in basic service delivery. We must recognise the great strides made by the previous council, we must ensure that we maintain our existing assets and ensure that we continue to provide our residents with the highest services possible" he said.
The incumbent eThekwini mayor stressed an emphasis that the new executive committe will have to improve their oversight to ensure that all the resources of the city (be the human resource, technical or financial resources) were utilized economically, effectivelly and efficiently.
Nxumalo also announced that working in partnership with organised business and the trade union leadership, they will as the new exco hold an Indaba to deliberate and brainstorm on strategic plans that aim to increase employment opportunities of the city residents and how they the put in place mechanisms to grow the municipality's economy.
"Fellow colleagues, we are servants of our residents and visitors. Councillors must be seen to be working together with all our people and we must ensure that our communities are always part of development as we create better lives for all" concluded Nxumalo.
Even the opposition partyleadership sang praises of the Mayor's maiden speech, with Minority Front leader Amichand Rajbansi and the National Freedom Party's Wiseman Mcoyi both saying the mayor promise is good for the eThekwini Municipality's future goals.

NEW MARKETS & NEW FLIGHTS FOR SA's TOURISM INDUSTRY
THE Indaba Tourism 2011 Global Media Face-Off tackled pertinent issues that will translate the South African tourism industry into a powerful emerging market that rightfully conforms to the critical objectives as outlined in the global trends and the country's National Tourism Sector Strategy frameworks.
These exciting news were deliberated upon at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre during the Indaba Tourism 2011 Global Media Face-Off that was moderated by the internationally-renowned CNN's Richard Quest, and was attended by approximately 500 domestic and foreign journalists.
South African Tourism CEO Thandiwe January-McClean emphasised the importance of the Soth African people, their culture, heritage and their lifestyle offerings and dubbed it as a critical key towards enhancing athe country's vibrant tourism industry and how they aimed to maximise the international visitor gains.
She noted that South Africa's further success in the tourism industry lies in the diversification of the country's target market base, coupled with the offerings it presented to the wider international tourist.
" The objectives of the National Tourism Sector Strategy is a new focus supported by South African Tourism's marketing strategies and campaigns for the subsequent years, and of particular importance to us are the new markets that showed exponential growth last year" said January-McClean.
Despite reservations from the panellists over the critical challenges encountered through the swift air travel inside and outside the country, Allan Moore from the Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa, re-assurred 2011 Indaba Tourism delegates that 'if there were air routes that were proving to be competitive and cost effective,' they will not hesitate in adding more flights.
"The projected growth in air travel to the Republic would create further motivation for additional flights. We shall address the call to reign in costs as this reduce attractiveness for airlines usage. This was a concerning challenge that needs to be addressed to reach out to our arrival targets from identified tourism markets" explained Moore.
Speaker after speaker noted that they needed to collaborate holisticly and it agreed that the key to success lies in communication between various tourism sector bodies.
The past immediate Head of the Durban's ICC, who is now the International Marketing Council CEO, Miller Matola said the emerging market threshold could not have come at a better time as it presented huge opportunities for the country's local leisure and business tourism bodies.
Accordingly, Matola paraphrased the discussion into four words; "New markets, same challenges", and he cajoled the tourism industry stakeholders to maximise new opportunities now that they were members of the rapidly-trade developing 'Brazil, Russia,India, China, South Africa' axis.
"Given South Africa's prominence in the emerging global economy, following our recent intergation into BRICS, the rise of the developing world's share of global economic power is particularly relevant to future growth of the tourism industry" emphasized Matola.

DURBAN HOSTS THE HICA SYMPOSIUM
LEADING KwaZulu-Natal trade and hospitality industry stakeholders have hailed the hosting of the sub-Saharan Hotel Investment Conference Africa (HICA) symposium in Durban's North Coast Fairmont Zimbali Resort on May 5-6, 2011 as the country's biggest hospitality investment Indaba to date.
According to the stakeholders, HICA is the 'Think Tank' that aims to provide insight into global best practise in the hotel sector and promote actual investment projects, and has evolved over the years to have a more specific focus on hotel investment opportunities.
KZN MEC for Economic Development and Tourism spokesperson Bheko Madlala has described HICA 2011 as 'the most influential hotel investment conference'.
"As the provincial government arm tasked to regulate the trade and economic development, we are excited with the hosting of HICA in our province.
This will translate into numerous business opportunities to our citizens, be the well-established hospitality industry operators, emerging hotel industry entrepreneurs, investors and developers in the wider South African hospitality industry sector" said Madlala.
Madlala added, the HICA symposium was organized by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) and both the Tourism KZN and Trade and Investment KZN were named as the official partners of the HICA 2011 two-day symposium.

UNISA GRADUATES CALLED TO ASSIST UNDERGRADUATES
The KwaZulu-Natal Alumni Chapter has called upon all the UNISA graduates to play an active and meaningful role towards enhancing their alma mater's social and educational responsibilities.
This clarion call was pronounced by Unisa officials during the KZN Alumni Chapter Breakfast that was attended by approximately 500 graduates and was held at the Durban's beachfront hotel on the first weekend of June 2010.
From Unisa's Registrar Academic Prof Louis Molamu, Unisa Foundation Director Pat Lawrence, Unisa's Durban Campus Director GM Ntombela to the KZN Alumni Chapter convenor Steve Mkasi, they all spoke highly of the achievements, sacrifices and tribulations that the Unisa graduates had to endure in meeting and conquering the distance learning environment challenges.
Speaker after speaker implored that all Unisa graduates carry a responsibility as the custodians of the Unisa heritage to give back selflessly to their alma mater by empowering their fellow undergraduate brothers and sisters.
"On behalf of the university I want to express my gratitude at the multitude of Unisa graduates that were attending the KZN Chapter Alumni Breakfast.
As our graduates you remain central to all that we, as Unisa, strive and aim to achieve in line with our transformation agenda 2015.
Let all our alumni contribute to the development of our learning programmes by giving his or her time in assisting our undergraduates in their academic-related difficulties" said the Durban regional Director Ntombela.
The Unisa graduates can play an active and meaningful role towards the sustainance and co-ordination of the Unisa's empowerment and social investment enrichment programmes 'by becoming lifelong learners', alluded Unisa Foundation Director.
Let all Unisa graduates, she added, play a meaningful role and assist their alma mater to continue to provide human investment opportunies to the multiple sectors of the South African communities.
"The Unisa Alumni Association was established in order to mobilise alumni in the service of the university and to improve the level of engagement between South Africa's oldest institution of higher learning and its former students.
The Alumni Chapters were spread all over the nine provinces and abroad to act as a vehicle to advance the vision and mission of Unisa, as we strive to become the African University in the service of humanity" observed Lawrence.
Registrar Prof Molamu also called upon all the Unisa qualified professionals as the broader community of Alumni ( he cited people who obtained degrees, diplomas and certificates) to register on the Alumni database found on Unisa website in norder to actively participate in the 'academic-social-economic activities' of the varsity and contribute to Unisa's long-term success and sustainability.
"As Unisa graduates you will always have a pivotal role to play. We want to ensure that the quality of your qualifications meets and conforms to the international standards.
We would like to utilise your academic proficiencies to the development of a new crop of Unisa graduates.
As the academic staff we're disheartened by the high number of university drop-outs in the country.
Hence, we're calling upon our Alumni to assist Unisa by contributing to our tutorial programmes as they 'already posses first-hand experience of what it takes to study through distance learning'
The KZN Alumni Chapter convenor related an anectdote about his distance learning challenges as a Unisa Durban campus student.
Mkasi emphasised that his knowhow of difficulties associated with distance learning challenges compelled him to be the first graduate to register as a tutor in the School of Law as an LLB graduate.
"Speaking from my personal experience as an undergraduate in the Durban campus, it took nine out of ten teleconferences to get help from the professors based in Pretoria as they were normally out of office.
It is precisely for this prime reason that I am calling upon you , fellow graduates, that we selflessly contribute to the attainment of proper education and qualifications by our fellow undergraduate brothers and sisters.
